The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)
Intro
Islamic State(IS) new name of Islamic States of Iraq and Syria(ISIS) is a terrorist organisation that seized large swathes of territory in eastern Syria and across northern and western Iraq. Its brutal Tactics includes mass killing of the member of religious and ethnic minorities and beheading of soldiers and journalists.
AIM
  1. To establish a Caliphate system( a state ruled by a single political and religious leader according to Islamic Law or Sharia 
  2. Now at this time it is limited to Iraq and Syria, IS aim is to break the borders of Jordan and Lebanon and to free Palestine
  3. It attract the support of the Muslim is the world and demand allegiance to its leader(Abu Bakr-Al Baghdadi 
Origin
  1. Origin of IS trace back in 1999, made by late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, He belonged to Jordan who setup Tawhid wa al Jihad in 2002
  2. When US invasion Iraq, Zarqawi join hand with Osama Bin Laden and formed Al- Qaeda in Iraq(AQI) and became a major force in the insurgency 
  3. In 2006 After the death of Zarqawai. Islamic States in Iraq(ISI) was steadily weakened by the US troops surge
  4. In 2010, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi become the new leader of ISI's. He rebuilt the capabilities of ISI and by 2013 he started dozens of attacks in Iraq again.
  5. April 2013 Baghdadi announced the merger of his forces scattered in Iraq and Syria and also announced the creation of Islamic State in Iraq and Levant
  6. The leaders of al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda rejected the move but fighter moved to help ISIS in Syria
  7. In Dec 2013 IS shifted its focus again on Iraq and Exploited a political stand off bw shia led govt and minority Sunni Arab community
  8. In june 2014 ISIS declared the creation of caliphate and change its name to Islamic State (IS)

Territory does IS control
The Major territory includes cities - Mosul, Tikrit, Falluja and Tal Afar in Iraq; Raqqa in Syria - oil fields, dams, main roads and border crossings
Fighters available
According to US, IS is having about 31,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria. Asignificant number of IS fighter are not from Iraq and Syria. The Soufan Group( (Islamic State and other rebel groups via third-party countries such as Egypt and Turkey) recently estimated that more than 12,000 foreign nationals from 81 countries traveled to Syria to fight. 2500 fighter also from Western world.
Weapons does IS have

IS fighter are using following weapons


  1. IS have wide variety of small arms and heavy weapons, which includes machine guns(truck mounted), anti- aircraft guns,rocket launchers, portable surface-to-air missile systems
  2. They are also having tanks captured from Syrian and Iraqi armies 
  3. And they are having constant supply of ammunition 



IS get its money from
  1. It is the world wealthiest militant group and have $2bn in cash and assets
  2. At the beginning it was supported by the individuals coming from Arab Gulf stats 
  3. Now it is self-financed organisation earning from oil and gas fields it control, taxation tolls,smuggling,extortion and kidnapping
